The Other –
whose eye is so close to mine, I cannot see…
is it he, or she who studies me? –
remarks upon the color of the iris of my eye:
“Hazel
in dim light;
greener
in bright.”
My response:
“I know.”
Yet, despite our intimate proximity –
quite literally eye-to-eye –
I cannot see the color of the eye that peers
at me.

You are blind to the eye looking at your own? Perhaps you don’t want to see because you view the act as intimacy. The words of the viewer sound like mine. But, when I look in the eyes of women, in my dreams, I never see much color, either…just dark spots or no eyes, at all. Usually, the face is tilted away from me. I just imagine looking women in the eye. When I finally do, in reality, it does feel like inappropriate intimacy.
