“Sassafras” — C.Birde, 6/17

With our backs pressed

to the smooth, silver trunk

of the Beech,

We’ll sip sassafras tea

and decipher the patterns

of steam

scrawled

upon the fragrant

morning air.

  1. What a beautiful picture! I love reading your poems. They are deeply descriptive actively feeding the imagination !!!

    • Thank you, Anya 🙂 Whenever I see Sassafras, I think of a moment from childhood when camping, and one of my elder cousins, Ken, pointed out the tender young plants and then made tea from their roots. Delicious! I was amazed! It wasn’t until I was older that I understood Sassafras could grow to be a huge tree — I thought they were a shrub 🌳😃

      • What a surprise but that’s how we learn 😁 I really like your approach to nature and the fact you thouroghly embrace it!!!
