Eyes — A Poem

“Dragonfly-Eyed Coneflower” — C.Birde, 7/24

Eyes

dragonfly wide

peering

asking:

why stand idly by

when with hearts

hands

minds unified

in kindness &

compassion

our world

we might entirely

redefine?

— C.Birde, 7/24

Companion — A Poem

“Sassafrases” — C.Birde, 5/24

In May’s unclouded light,

I walked my grief –

short leash heart-tethered

Cool blue breath against

my skin reverberating

with our paired gait’s

catch & swing

Strides synchronized

etched from fragrant air

Each, a pulse of beauty,

a tear shed for my own,

for the world’s suffering

Heart-leash short tethered

wending home again

On my doorstep –

patient, casting shadow

Nowhere to go, I let it in.

— C.Birde, 5/24

Crickets’ Song — A Poem

A photo of a swampy meadow filled with greenery, beneath a broad blue sky.
“Rattlesnake Meadow, Summer” — C.Birde, 8/22

I could sleep

away the season’s end,

head upon this pillow

of bronze ferns

& oak leaves turned

the color of doeskin,

Cheek pressed

to this still-green bed

of moss as you sing

against my ear

Please, let me remain

undisturbed until

the heat has passed

Though this means

I must wait

another year to hear

your song.

— C.Birde, 9/22

Loyalty — An Image

An up-close photo of a white datura flower, in full bloom. A tiny insect traverses one of its petals...
“Datura” — C.Birde, 7/22

Wreathed

in pale,

lemon-scented Datura,

softly,

she spoke:

“May all your loyalties be

true,

worthy,

&

returned.”

— C.Birde, 7/22

The Four Sisters — An Image

A photo looking up through the green-leafed canopy of four old oak trees.
“The Four Sisters” — C.Birde, 6/22

“Come with me…”

she took my hand,

drew me through her

birdsong wake.

“We’ll sit together

at the Four Sisters’ knees

& listen

to their green-leafed

memories.”

— C.Birde, 6/22

Beauty — An Image

An artfully augmented photo of a woodland path, the foreground sprinkled with Spring Beauty wildflowers.
“Spring Beauties” — C.Birde, 5/22

“May your path

be strewn

with beauty – ”

she gestured,

& flowers bloomed.

“May you recognize it

as so.”

— C.Birde, 5/22

Earth — An Image

A photo of an elevated swell of hill, seen from below through a veil of trees.
“Tourne Landscape” — C.Birde, 4/22

I hear your whisper,

answer your call,

sing chorus

to your melody.

There is no

separateness.

You & I

are We.

— C.Birde, 4/22

Sage — An Image

An artfully altered photo of grand, old oak trees, not yet leafed out.
“The Sisters” — C.Birde, 4/22

“We are tied,

you & I,

“inextricably intertwined,”

her words pulsed

with Time’s unfolding,

“Your actions writ

upon my canvas.

Be wise.

Be kind.”

— C.Birde, 4/22

Sea Prayer Song — A Poem

An artfully altered photo of a sandy bluff that falls away to the sea below.
“Atlantic (Truro)” — C.Birde, 4/22

I take my heart

to the sea

for safekeeping;

with blessings,

the pines’ sighs

pleat the air;

& the chickadees

bind us All

in song.

— C.Birde, 4/22

An artfully altered photo of a sandy path, between slim, young, pale-trunked oaks and dark evergreens.
“Sea Path (Truro)” — C.Birde, 4/22
